Training your dog is important for a wide variety of reasons, including safety and health concerns, among others. Whether you plan on training your dog yourself or taking the animal to a professional trainer, the following tips can help you to end up with an obedient, well-behaved pet.

Enforce the commands that you give your dog. Do not let up until they complete the task you have asked them to do. If you are not serious about making them do what you have commanded, then they will learn that they dont have to do it. Follow through is key to training.

Giving your dog proper treats is the best way to train. You must always provide treats in a wise and timely fashion. If you dont do it at the correct time, the dog may become confused about the reward.

When teaching a puppy basic commands, start with sit. This is the easiest one for a dog to master. Hold his favorite snack just above his nose, and firmly say sit. Most dogs will instinctively sit down at this point. Offer him the treat and dont forget to praise him profusely. If he doesnt sit, gently push his rear end towards the floor. After he has been sitting for a few seconds, give him the treat, and like before, remember to praise him.

Not all dogs are comfortable around other dogs or people. The best way to train your dog to be more comfortable around other animals or people is to expose them to as many people and other dogs as often as possible, preferably earlier in their life. This will make them accustomed to being around others.

Exercise

All dogs need daily exercise and it can be an important part of your training efforts. Daily exercise shows your dog that he is a member of the family, as well as letting him know you are a strong leader. Exercise encourages his confidence and provides you with wonderful bonding opportunities.

Exercise is an important part of any dogs training program. Animals that are restless and cooped up are more likely to act out and have difficulty following instructions. Taking your dog out for a daily walk or bringing them to a local dog part will help them to be successful.

If your dog barks and growls at strangers in your home, do this: leash your dog, make him sit, wait until his attention is on you, and hand the leash, in full view of the dog, to your guest. Then wait until the dog is calm again, with the guest giving commands as needed. This teaches the dog that your guest ranks above him in "the pack" and he must accept them. When the dog starts to react again, repeat the exercise.

Nutrition

Remember how many treats you reward your dog with during the course of the day to avoid fattening him up. These treats are often ignored when considering calories, and yet they have an impact on the diet and health of your pet.

Your dog will need a diet high in nutrition to maintain his vitality and health. This means that you should be picky about what you feed your dog. Making your own dog food can help to reduce fillers that do nothing for your pet, while increasing the crude protein to a healthy and more beneficial level.

These tips help to explain why it is necessary to ensure that your dog is properly trained. Even if a professional trainer teaches your dog how to behave, in the end, your dog has to listen to you, the owner. By following these tips, you can make sure that your dog always knows whos in charge.
